MEET THE NEWFOUNDLAND:
A large dog and a true workhorse, the Newfoundland is a master at long-distance swimming and has true lifesaving instincts in the water. He is large and strong, possessing a heavy coat to protect him from icy waters. Equally at home in the water and on land, today's Newfoundland competes in conformation, obedience, agility, tracking, draft and water tests, and carting. His coat can be black, brown, gray, or white and black.
THE HISTORY:
There is much uncertainty about the origin of the Newfoundland. Some say that his ancestors are the white Great Pyrenees, dogs brought to the coast of Newfoundland by the Basque fisherman; others that he descended from a French hound (probably the Boarhound); but all agree that he originated in Newfoundland and that his ancestors were undoubtedly brought there by fishermen from the European continent. Many old prints of Newfoundlands show apparent evidence of a Husky ancestor, while other traits can be traced to other breeds. At any rat, a dog evolved which was particularly suited to the island of his origin.
TRAINING AND TEMPERAMENT:
The Newfie's U.S.breed standard says, "Sweetness of temperament is the hallmark of the Newfoundland; this is the most important single characteristic of the breed." The innate goodness of the Newfs is best expressed in their affinity for kids-they take naturally to the role of nanny dog. Trusting and trainable, Newfs respond well to gentle guidance. These galumphing giants are among the world's biggest dogs, and acquiring a pet that weighs more than many adult humans comes with obvious challenges. Newfs are great with children and other pets.
DID YOU KNOW:
**Exported to England, where it was extensively bred; today, most Newfoundlands of Pedigree, even in Newfoundland, are descended from forebears born in England.
**The Newfoundland is large enough to bring drowning victims ashore; lung capacity enables long-distance swimming.
**The Newfoundland's great size and strength make him a wonderful guard dog, but his disposition makes him good for children families.
**Although he is a superior water dog, the Newfoundland has been used and is still used in Newfoundland and Labrador as a true working dog, pulling carts or carrying burdens as a pack horse.
**James Buchanan's large Newfoundland, Lara was a celebrity around the White House because she would lay motionless for hours with one eye opened and one eye closed, always sure to keep an eye on her owner.

The most famous painting of a large white and black dog of this type is a portrait called, "A Distinguished Member of Humane Society," done by the renowned English animal painter Sir Edwin Landseer in 1838. In fact the subject matter of many of Sir Edwin's paintings focused on these dogs. The dog portrayed in one of the most famous paintings is believed to have saved more than 20 people from drowning. It therefore was adopted as a member of the humane society.
